Santa Maria Police Station
The National Police Station, situated in the city of Santa Maria, encompasses an area of 790.31m2 spread across three floors. Apart from housing offices and detention cells, it also includes two apartments designed with basic amenities to accommodate police personnel during inter-island deployments, thereby mitigating housing expenses for agents stationed on the island.
Implemented within the precincts of this station is the “Safe Tourism” Project, aimed at curbing violence and crime against tourists on the island. This initiative hinges on collaborative efforts from various sectors of society, including tourist operators, law enforcement agencies, and visitors themselves. Embracing a holistic and systematic approach, the project underscores the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in addressing criminal activities, emphasizing that crime prevention is not solely the prerogative of the National Police.
Execution of the project involves a coordinated operational plan led by the National Police, in conjunction with partners such as the Judiciary Police, Armed Forces, tourist industry operators, Directorate General of Tourism, non-governmental organizations, and the wider community of Sal Island.
