Cape Verdean Tries British Food for the First Time at The Britannia in Santa Maria

If you’re craving traditional British comfort food in Cape Verde, Britannia Bar & Restaurant in Santa Maria, Sal Island is the perfect place to experience it. On this visit, Betty tried classic British dishes for the very first time, diving into a full selection of iconic UK favourites prepared right here in Cape Verde.

We started with the famous fish and chips, served golden, crispy, and perfectly seasoned — just the way it should be. Next was the hearty steak and ale pie, a true British classic filled with rich flavours and slow-cooked tenderness. To complete the experience, we enjoyed the legendary Sunday roast, featuring all the essentials of a traditional British Sunday meal. Each dish brought an authentic taste of the UK, crafted with care by the team at Britannia.

No British feast would be complete without a proper English beer. With every sip, the flavours paired beautifully with the dishes and added to the authentic pub-style atmosphere. Throughout the meal, we compared these dishes to familiar Cape Verdean flavours, discovering how surprisingly well British cuisine fits into the island’s food scene.

Located in the heart of Santa Maria, Britannia Bar & Restaurant is known for its warm welcome, friendly staff, and delicious home-style cooking. Whether you’re a British traveller missing the taste of home or a visitor curious to try something new, Britannia offers an enjoyable dining experience for everyone.
