Three days of wind, waves and floods in Santa Maria
Sal is famous for sunshine and calm turquoise water, but storms do sometimes reach the island. When a 3-day storm was forecast for Santa Maria, we took the camera out to show you what it’s really like: the wind, the waves, the flooded streets and the calm afterwards.
Storm Day 1 in Santa Maria, Sal
On the first day of the storm, strong winds swept across Santa Maria and big waves crashed along the beach and the pier. We walked the seafront to show you what Sal looks like when the weather turns, which is something most visitors never get to see.
Poker Night Through the Floods
With the storm in full swing and the streets of Santa Maria under water, most people stayed home. We didn’t! Join us as we wade through the floods to pick up a friend for our weekly poker night. It’s a fun, real-life look at island life during the storm, and at how committed we are to our cards.
The Day After the Storm
Once the wind had dropped, we went back out to see what the storm had left behind. We checked the beach, the pier, the seafront and the streets of Santa Maria. Life on Sal soon gets back to normal, and here you can watch the island recover.
